What are the chances of this happening again to me?
So i worked at a auto refinance company and had to obtain the payoff for a customer from Cap 1. In order to do that you input the customer's social security #. So i was pressing the numbers on the phone pad and in the 6th digit i pressed the wrong number, i got frustrated and randomly pressed the remaining 3 numbers. And it so just happend that random social security i typed also had a auto loan at Cap 1. What are the chances of guessing a social security number with an auto loan at a specific bank? Do i have a better chance at the lottery?? lol
Well here's a very, very rough estimate:
SSNs are 9 digits, so that means there are an absolute max of 10^9 possible numbers. The actual number is probably somewhat less, as the gov't probably assigns them in particular ways and whatnot. But, I don't want to look up those details so let's just go with 10^9.
I don't know how many auto loans Capital 1 (I assume that's what Cap 1 means?) has given out. I'm going to guess it has 100,000 active loans...again, this may be too high or too low, I'm not sure.
So, the chance that you'd type in one at capital 1 is
100,000 / 10^9 = 0.0001 = .01%, or 1 in 10,000.
So, it's pretty small, but the chance is FAR greater than winning the lottery. For example, the chance of winning the jackpot in the Powerball lottery is 1:146 million!
So, while you are lucky, I'd say you're not quite lucky enough to make playing the Powerball on a large scale a profitable investment!
