How do you convert diesel engine power to electric motor power ?
What size electric motor would i need if i am using a 50 horsepower diesel engine?
You probably know that the 50 Hp engine is big enough, but have no way of knowing if a smaller engine would work. Therefore, you need a motor that will do everything the engine can do. Ultimately that may mean that the motor must capable of providing equal or greater torque than the engine at every possible operating speed. You need to know if the engine can provide 50 Hp at or near the maximum operating speed. A 50 Hp motor may or may not be sufficient. You need to know the maximum operating speed of the engine. Then you need to compare that with standard motor speeds. For 60 Hz motors, the standard speeds are about 3500 RPM, 1750 RPM and 1160 RPM. You can get motors rated 875 RPM and slower, but the slower motors are not stock items. Unless the motor is going to run at full speed all of the time, you will need a variable frequency drive (VFD) to change the speed. VFDs normally reduce the operating speed from the standard motor speed. Speed increase is possible, but the power selection will be more difficult. If there is a mismatch between the engine RPM and available motor speeds, you need to see if you can change the gear ratio. If you can't, you may need a VFD and a motor that is larger than 50 Hp. A description of the driven load and the manner of operation would be helpful.
